The wolf measures about 80 cm at the withers. The male can weigh between 30 and 40 kg.
Its fur can take on different colors ranging from white to black, passing through different shades of gray and brown.
Wolves live mainly in packs, organized according to a very precise hierarchy. The latter is dictated by a couple, called "dominant" or "alpha", which is generally the only one in the pack to procreate, and which imposes submission on the other members of the pack.
It is the leader of the pack who orders the hunt to begin, and he is also the first to feed when the prey is killed. A pack is generally made up of about ten individuals. The wolf communicates using different vocalizations, in order to communicate with the rest of the pack: growls, barks, moans.
The most commonly used means of communication among wolves, however, remains howling: it serves to maintain a certain cohesion in the pack, to bring it together, and to warn other members of the pack in case of danger.
